Episode #35 – Accents Abound!

7 02 2010

On this episode of the Mild Mannered Podcast we’re doing an episode entirely in London! I, your long running host, The Mild Mannered Photographer was unable to record with The Mild Mannered Man on the Street or the Mild Mannered Music Man this week, luckily I was able to wrangle in some new friends from the other room and the original 3 man podcast became a 6 man podcast party, lots of subjects were discussed, here are just some of them.

– Doesn’t matter whether it’s Gosh Comics or Forbidden Planet, buying comics in London is expensive!

– We debate the storytelling merits of Seaguy by Grant Morrison

– I do some live on the scene reporting at Forbidden Planet during the signing of The 45 from ComX Comics

– And we all agree that Axe Cop is smegging awesome.

5 10 2009

hellboy2_sm

Welcome to Halloween Month! We will be reviewing 4 different trades that celebrate terror, horror, and just plain creepy things. To kick off October, we begin with Mike Mignola’s HELLBOY (Volumes 1 – 3), and to stand in for the sorely missed Man on the Street is Matt Sanders, the Voice on the Radio, who’s in-depth critique enters the fray of both the Music Man and the Photographer. Plus, Alex tells of his exploits at the “Comics for Collectors” in Ithaca, Mike gives a shout-out to Frank Miller’s Sin City, and Matt joins in on the trades coming out this week! Don’t miss this demonic episode of the Mild Mannered Podcast, where comics prevail!

How can we forget the Masterpiece Comic Book Theatre? This week’s comes from Deadpool: Suicide Kings! Enjoy!

Let me just go ahead and Spoil my Pick for the Week now

16 07 2009

Spoiler alert! Mild Mannered Photographer here to tell you that MADAME XANADU VOL. 1: DISENCHANTED is going to be my pick of the week for the next podcast, you may think I would pick the beginning of Andy Diggle’s run of Thunderbolts, which is really good, but it’s hardcover and 25 buckaroonies.  Sure I’ve bought hardcover trades for 25 bucks, but instead I picked up the first volume of Madame Xanadu for 3 simple reasons:

  1. TEN issues in one trade, that’s 240 pages total!!!
  2. The Trade only costs $12.99!!!
  3. The artist for Madame Xanadu, Amy Reeder Hadley drew a jaw droppingly beautiful free sketch for me at Mocca-Fest

If you know me at all you will know that I will quickly become a fan of any artist if I receive free art from them and I then want to buy anything they have done when it comes out in trades. (I’m looking at you Chris Giarusso) But Amy was actually cool enough to let me videotape her while she was sketching and I asked her some questions, so check it out below because it was super neat and I didn’t get a chance to post this video when I first took it after Mocca Fest, but now its timely. 🙂

And come on, you get ten issues for only 13 bucks, that’s a value you don’t often see in many trades. I haven’t started reading it yet, but when I start I will give some of my impressions.

This week, we got a one-two punch special;  we will discuss/debate/bicker over the Best, the Worst, and the Weirdest Fathers and Fatherly figures of comic books. You’ll find out why we think Uncle Ben is unquestionably great  while Magneto and General Ross are just plain abysmal. But wait, there’s more! We top off the show with Deadpool Appreciation Week, where we will (individually) review 3 different perspectives of the famous “Merc with a Mouth”. Is your favorite Deadpool comic/trade being reviewed? We don’t know! You’ll have to tune in and find out!

Plus, a special message to Liu Kang of “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe,” Alex’s new favorite writer, the most perfect thing ever said in a Green Goblin voice, and a special mission for all you wonderful listeners! We’ve got all of that and more on this week’s episode!

Episode #7 – Podcasters Disassembled! (Not Really)

8 06 2009

Yes, this week we continue our voyage into Marvel Comics’ recent history with a review of Brian Bendis and David Finch’s Avengers Disassembled trade paperback. The debate gets pretty spirited, so don’t miss this one! Also in this episode, Alex breaks down the nitty-gritty details of his epic day at the annual MoCCA Convention in New York City. Meanwhile, Mike and Sam gnash their teeth in jealousy.

Elsewhere in the podcast, you can hear the mild mannered men performing a scene from “The Age of the Sentry” #4, learn about Mike’s utterly fascinating new day job, discover in what manner you should spend that extra five hundred bucks kicking around in your wallet, and find out exactly what Alex would do for a Klondike bar. Hint: There doesn’t seem to be much he wouldn’t do. All this and more in Episode 7! Listen, subscribe, tell your friends and tell us what you thought!

Episode #6 – Arkham’s Podcast Studio for The Mild Mannered

31 05 2009

On this week’s podcast, we review Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth by Grant Morrison and Dave McKean, all the while trying not to go batshit crazy. (Heh. Batshit. Get it?) Yes, it’s a heartwarming tale of psychoses in honor of National Mental Health Month. Plus, a double whammy as Sam and Carolyn perform a foreboding scene from Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s The Killing Joke!

And be sure that you don’t miss out on Alex’s latest comic spree, Sam’s heartfelt birthday present and a brand new segment–our “GTFO of the Week.” All this and dirty jokes too!
