Let me just go ahead and Spoil my Pick for the Week now

16 07 2009

Spoiler alert! Mild Mannered Photographer here to tell you that MADAME XANADU VOL. 1: DISENCHANTED is going to be my pick of the week for the next podcast, you may think I would pick the beginning of Andy Diggle’s run of Thunderbolts, which is really good, but it’s hardcover and 25 buckaroonies.  Sure I’ve bought hardcover trades for 25 bucks, but instead I picked up the first volume of Madame Xanadu for 3 simple reasons:

  1. TEN issues in one trade, that’s 240 pages total!!!
  2. The Trade only costs $12.99!!!
  3. The artist for Madame Xanadu, Amy Reeder Hadley drew a jaw droppingly beautiful free sketch for me at Mocca-Fest

If you know me at all you will know that I will quickly become a fan of any artist if I receive free art from them and I then want to buy anything they have done when it comes out in trades. (I’m looking at you Chris Giarusso) But Amy was actually cool enough to let me videotape her while she was sketching and I asked her some questions, so check it out below because it was super neat and I didn’t get a chance to post this video when I first took it after Mocca Fest, but now its timely. 🙂

And come on, you get ten issues for only 13 bucks, that’s a value you don’t often see in many trades. I haven’t started reading it yet, but when I start I will give some of my impressions.

Darkseid Minus New Gods

17 06 2009

We’ve been really down on Final Crisis and everything, and so I’m making it up to DC by doing a whole blog post talking about what I hope becomes a new internet Meme, Darkseid Minus New Gods.

Via the guys at Metafilter I found this hilarious post from 4thLetter blogger Gavok who had this fantastic stroke of genius and like any modern day blogger decided to unbirth it onto the internet, if Mamet and Pinter had to write a play all about final crisis I would like to think it would just be this.

And so we come to the end of our archive, with our lengthy review of Popgun Vol.1, “a graphic mix tape” edited by Mark Andrew Smith and Joe Keatinge. This was our first long-distance podcast, so in between the audio hiccups, we discussed Alex’s comic book bender in New York City, Sam gushed over the Batman: Mad Love hardcover edition, and Mike the Mild Mannered Thespian delivered a chilling performance of Norman Osborn’s barely-sane monologue in Warren Ellis’s Thunderbolts #120 for Masterpiece Comic Book Theatre.
